General Hospital spoilers indicate that Nathan Dean has finished his time as Ethan Lovett and has left the show. Dean was recently removed from the contract section in the closing credits, and it’s now confirmed that Christian Howard has taken over the role, debuting as the new Ethan recast.
In the July 27 episode, viewers saw the announcement that Christian Howard is now playing Ethan Lovett. With this switch, Howard has officially stepped into the role.
However, upcoming spoilers suggest that Ethan’s departure from Port Charles is happening soon. Summer previews reveal that Ethan is preparing to leave, as his past is catching up with him.
Ethan Leaving Port Charles Soon
Fans will watch Ethan go on the run, which appears to connect with the introduction of a new character, Hudson (Troy Lennon Appel), debuting July 30. On July 31, Ethan will share some big news with Lulu Spencer (Alexa Havins Bruening), possibly letting her know he’s making a quick exit.
Lulu is expected to press Ethan for answers and suspect he’s in trouble, but Ethan might avoid her questions as much as he can.
The timing of the recast is unusual, since Ethan’s storyline seems close to wrapping up. There could have been a scheduling conflict that prevented Nathan Dean from finishing all his scenes, or perhaps the show expects to bring Ethan back for future storylines.
It’s possible Ethan’s time on the run will be short, allowing Howard to return for major developments—like uncovering the truth about Phoebe’s (Luna and Lucia Creighton) biological father.
Regardless, there’s a new Ethan on-screen now, and fans are already reacting to this unexpected casting change. Social media is buzzing about Howard stepping into Dean’s role and taking the character in a different direction.
Why Nathan Dean Left Show
Dean made his return in the spring after being away for six years. In an exclusive interview with TV Insider, he shared that he started considering a comeback after the passing of Anthony Geary, who portrayed Ethan’s father, Luke Spencer. Once executive producer Frank Valentini and casting director Mark Teschner contacted him, Dean was prepared to reprise his role.
“Initially, they wanted three years,” he shared at the time. “I said, ‘I can’t do three years. There’s a lot going on in my personal life. I need to be home with my wife and all this stuff, so can’t do three years, can’t do two years.’ So, we agreed to do these next four months, see how it goes, and they have a pretty interesting little story lined up.”
