Elvis Presley will forever be known as the King of Rock and Roll. Fans all over the world still mourn the singer’s death, which happened in August 1977. At the time of his death, Elvis was overweight, and his death was ultimately ruled a heart attack. He was found deceased on the toilet. Now, years later, Dr. George “Nick” Nichopoulos, who was a longtime friend and physician of Elvis, is revealing the real reason he passed away. Keep reading to get all the details.

Elvis Presley Died For More Reasons Than Just Heart Attack

It’s true, Elvis Presley did have a heart attack and die on the toilet. However, the reason behind his having a heart attack is being shared by Dr. Nichopoulos. According to Dr. Nick, Elvis suffered from constipation. He was on multiple prescription drugs, including opioids, which can cause constipation.

After his tragic death, it was revealed that he had been suffering from four months of chronic constipation. According to Dr. Nick, Elvis did not want treatment for his issue because it would make him look weak. Elvis felt he could handle just about anything thrown his way. At the time, the physicians pushed for him to get a colostomy bag to help with his chronic issues. He refused, fearing an accident could occur on stage and embarrass him further.

Elvis attempting to handle the situation himself with excessive pushing to have a bowel movement is what reportedly led to his untimely heart attack. Dr. Nichopoulos said, “After he died we weren’t sure (of the exact cause of death), so I continued to do some research, and I had some doctors call me from different places and different med schools that were doing research on constipation and different problems you can get into with it. I just want to get the story straight – it all made sense with the new research that was done.”

What Doctors Found During Autopsy

Doctors learned a lot more during the autopsy performed on Elvis Presley, which revealed that his colon was 8 to 9 feet in lenght which is double what a normal colon should be. It was also discovered that the diameter of his colon was significantly enlarged as well. A normal colon is 2 to 3 inches in diameter, while Elvis’ measured 5 to 6 inches at the time of his death.

Dr. Nick said that he believes if Elvis had taken medical advice regarding his constipation, he would still be alive today. Of course, nobody can know that for sure, but it’s interesting to think about.
