American Idol fans are outraged after a new voting rule introduced earlier this year is causing many problems. Fans are disgusted that the new rules are not very well laid out. The new rules introduced this year allow fans even more ways to vote for their favorite performers. Viewers can still vote on the official website and via text for their faves, but now there is also another way to cast that vote. The show decided to branch out and use social media platforms as another way to vote. However, the new options have proven to bring more outrage than support. Why is this happening?
American Idol Fans Upset With Voting Changes
The new voting system for American Idol is proving to be a joke for many trying to navigate it. The original plan for the new options was to utilize technology more and also try to reach a younger voting base. Showrunner Megan Michaels Wolflick has wanted to bring social media voting to the platform for nearly five years. So now, fans can also place their votes on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.
However, the new social media voting has met some challenges and obstacles. One example is the requirement that everyone who votes must be 18 or older. There is no known way to police this, so many wonder how that rule can actually even be enforced. Plus, one longtime fan noted that “The rules weren’t clear, but at the same time, they were too specific.”
Many feel the voting counts are not accurate. Why is that? It has been discovered that spelling someone’s name wrong or posting in the wrong thread can immediately disqualify your vote. Someone said, “A simple typo or extra letter could make it so a vote doesn’t count, and I know people would have a hard time finding which post to vote on.”

Fans React To Disappointing Voting
Fans have gone to various social media platforms to voice their outrage about American Idol’s new voting rules. Here are some of their comments:
- “Is it the live voting and immediate eliminations? Is it the social media voting?? Like what’s up this season is insane.”
- “Something has got to be skewing the vote. I have never in my life watched a season and seen so many talented people go through while more mediocre people get by week after week.”
- “Every week look at the Facebook American idol post…. Filled with people trying to vote but doing it wrong. It’s a joke.”
- “The social media voting is crazy, and they are definitely cutting people too fast. It’s hard for them to grow.”
Many hope the new voting rules will be further explained or the bugs worked out to make things fairer. However, right now, things remain the same. The show is hoping to reach a younger crowd with the new trends circulating on the web.
What do you think about the new voting rules? Have you used the social media voting?
