Young and the Restless stars have been loving seeing General Hospital veteran Roger Howarth on the soap as Matt Clark. Right now, Matt has amnesia and currently doesn’t remember the horrible things in the past. He’s the villain that everyone wants to stick around. But does he have a contract with the show? Is the amnesia storyline a way to boot him off set? Is Howarth leaving Y&R?

Could Matt Clark Be Leaving Genoa City?

Young and the Restless fans have been loving having Roger Howarth on the daytime drama. He plays the villainous Matt Clark well. However, now that he has amnesia, is he sticking around, or is he on his way out the door?

Sadly, Howarth does not have a long-term contract with the show. However, even though he doesn’t have a full-time contract, his recurring or brief narrative arcs allow him to appear and disappear in certain high-drama episodes as the infamous villain Matt Clark. Writers could easily write him off the show, but fans would be incredibly disappointed.

Here are what some fans are saying about Howarth on social media:

  • “Matt Clark is the most badassed actor on YnR. KEEP HIM! I want a complete and permanent storyline for Matt!”
  • “That sounds all good except for the fact that I don’t want Matt to be gone… Everything else? Yesssssss please! 🥺”
  • “I don’t want Matt off the show!”

Other fans noted they hope the character can become good and continue his time in Genoa City.

Writer’s Plans For Matt

Head Writer Josh Griffith tells Soap Opera Digest that Howarth’s character, Matt, can totally be redeemed. In fact, this might just be what writers are going for. Griffith said the moment they landed Howarth, they began to think of storylines and ways to keep him on set. This is why Matt now has amnesia. Griffith knew if he simply remained the evil villain, his time on the show wouldn’t last long-term.

He said, “I thought, ‘This guy is just so good and Matt is so bad! And if he continues to be that evil, he’s got a short shelf life. How can we reinvent him in a way that he can still be potentially threatening and a potential danger to the people around him, but redeem him from the horrible, horrible things that he’s done in the past?’”

Griffith said that Matt Clark can absolutely be redeemed moving forward. In fact, he already shocked everyone when he stepped up to help save Nick’s life after the overdose. Plus, Matt will not have amnesia forever. As his memories slowly return, he will see the horrible things he has done over the years. Will he be truly remorseful?

Right now, it appears writers are doing all they can to keep Howarth around. What do you think?
