American Idol season 24 is back, with judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Ryan Seacrest. This year’s season 24 is college-themed. Read on to find out when Season 24 premieres on ABC.
As in previous seasons, the first few episodes will focus on auditions held both online and in person at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee.
Hollywood Week: Music City Takeover is set in Nashville this year instead of the usual Hollywood Week round. Along with this change, season 24 will also have a new Ohana Round, where the last 30 singers will sing in front of a group of “industry tastemakers,” according to ABC. From there, the contestants will keep doing their best to get into the Top 20.
American Idol Season 24 premiere date revealed
American Idol’s newest season starts on January 26. It will have both new and old episode formats.
Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie, all of whom have won awards, are judging for the second season in a row.
Ryan Seacrest, who has been the host for a long time, is also coming back. All four stars will take on the role of mentors and teachers to graduates in the season’s theme of “Idol University.”
ABC says that for the first episodes, the judges took over Belmont University and turned it into Idol University, where “future stars take their first steps toward becoming the next American Idol.”
Every Monday at 8 p.m. ET, after the Jan. 26 premiere, there will be new episodes of American Idol. Every episode lasts two hours, until 10 p.m. ET. New episodes will air every Monday after the show starts on January 26. The show has only released the weekly breakdown up to the ninth episode, which features the Top 20 contestants, as of the season premiere.

ABC says, “a stellar lineup of industry tastemakers,” which will add a new element when the show goes to Hawai‘i. The Ohana Round is meant to be the “ultimate focus group” for contestants, giving them “peer respect, emotional support, and professional insight” before the final episodes switch to fan votes.
Along with the Ohana Round, season 24 will also have a new feature called social voting. Fans will be able to vote for contestants on social media, as well as by phone and text.
Megan Michaels Wolflick, the show’s creator, told Deadline, “We also have to meet the technology where it is.” “We want to make it as easy as possible for people to vote for their favorites and give their opinions in real time from their couch with their second screen.”
She said, “Maybe in three years we’ll have a talk where all we do is vote. But right now, you want to get the audience used to something new.
