Chrisley Knows Best stars Todd and Julie Chrisley are suing one of their former defense attorneys. The couple has been free from prison since President Trump pardoned their federal prison sentences last year. Now, Todd and Julie are seeking $25 million in damages from their former attorney. They believe his actions landed them in prison rather than kept them out of it. What exactly are they accusing him of?
Todd & Julie Chrisley Heading Back To Court
Todd and Julie Chrisley will be heading back to court, but this time it’s on their terms. They are suing their former defense attorney, Christopher Anulewicz, and his former law firm, Balch & Bingham. They are alleging that they didn’t do their job right, causing them to go to prison.
On top of failing to properly defend them, Todd and Julie allege that the attorney took advantage of their family. The court documents state, “While he was supposed to be managing this complex federal defense, he found time to steer the Chrisleys into a $75,000 investment in his brother-in-law’s startup food truck business—exploiting his position as their attorney to benefit himself and his family while neglecting his duty to them.”
The complaint goes on to say that the “catastrophic, unforced error that sent two people to federal prison for crimes they would never have been convicted of had their lawyers done their jobs.”
The law firm being sued says it will vigorously fight the allegations but declines to comment any further.
What Are They Asking For?
The court documents state that Todd and Julie Chrisley are asking for a trial. They are seeking $25 million in damages as well as attorneys’ fees and any “further relief as the Court deems just and proper.”
Todd and Julie feel they deserve this money because they were not properly represented and defended. They served years in federal prison. Plus, they were separated from each other and their children, taking away valuable time they will never get back. They also lost their television show and endorsement deals, costing them far more than $25 million in income. The couple feels their reputations were also destroyed.
Part of the filed court documents state, “They have spent millions more in appeals and post-conviction proceedings, all of it an attempt to undo harm that a single timely motion would have prevented. A lawyer with actual criminal defense competence, supervised by a firm that took its professional obligations seriously, would never have let this happen.”
