On General Hospital, Britt Westbourne is planning to leave Port Charles, believing that it’s the right thing to do. Actress Kelly Thiebaud (Britt) told Soap Opera Digest why her troubled character is ready to book a one-way ticket out of town, even if it means she could die from Huntington’s disease. When Britt came back to Port Charles, GH writers were all set to give her a love interest in Jason Morgan, but it seems that with Steve Burton’s newly married life & wife, things have changed a lot for the character of Britt and Kelly Thiebaud. GH has now taken her character in a whole new direction.
Britt’s situation is complicated. With Jason (Steve Burton) in WSB custody after being accused of shooting Cullum (Andrew Hawkes), and Cullum determined to reveal the real shooter, Rocco (Finn Carr), Britt feels “like everything is closing in on her,” explains Thiebaud. She’s scared not only for herself but also for the people she cares about. Thiebaud adds, “Cullum is getting too close to figuring out it’s Rocco, and if anything happened to Rocco, I definitely think she would blame herself. She would totally feel like it’s her fault.”
General Hospital: Britt is Misunderstood
There’s also the pressure from others. Thiebaud points out, “But everyone else would blame her, too! She’s just getting pooh-poohed on constantly,” especially from Dante (Dominic Zamprogna), who in the May 21 episode, made it clear he holds Britt responsible for his son firing a bullet at a WSB agent.
“People don’t really give Britt the benefit of the doubt and she deals with a lot of hate,” Thiebaud says. “Sure, some of it’s warranted, but I don’t think people really understand her.” According to Thiebaud, Britt’s care for Rocco is real. “She wants to do whatever she can to protect him and get him out of this situation,” she insists.
Leaving town might help throw Cullum off Rocco’s trail and prevent Britt from finishing the prototype Cullum and Sidwell (Carlo Rota) need for their plan. But this decision comes at a great cost, since Cullum is the one providing Britt with the medication she needs to keep her Huntington’s disease under control. Still, it’s a price Britt seems willing to pay.
Britt Will Give Up Her Medications To Save Rocco
As for why Britt is prepared to give up her medication and let the disease progress, Thiebaud reflects, “I think at this point, she is just like, ‘You know what? This isn’t worth it anymore, I’m just going to die of Huntington’s.’ It’s not in a ‘woe is me’ type of way, I just think she’s feeling really helpless and really alone. She does have people that she loves, but I don’t think she really feels like she has anyone in town that she can count on. So it’s easy to feel like, ‘It’s better for me to just go away because I’m the problem here.’” Some even think Britt does not even have Huntington’s disease, so maybe this wil be when she finds out, when she doesn’t have the meds that she needs.
Making a clean getaway won’t be simple. Britt will face “curveballs” as she attempts to leave Port Charles. Thiebaud teases, “She can’t catch a break, that’s for sure.” She adds, “I would like to see her life maybe not be so stressful and chaotic and life-or-death. I’d like to see her have a little bit of ease and fun — and maybe even some love soon!”
Kelly Thiebaud signed a multi-year deal with General Hospital, so it seems Britt Westbourne will be back eventually; the question is, how long will she be gone for?
