Abbe Lowell Takes On the Task Of Defending Don Lemon
Journalist Don Lemon is facing serious charges after being arrested following his involvement in an anti-ICE demonstration at a Minneapolis church. According to court documents, Lemon, along with eight others, was indicted on one count each of conspiracy against religious freedom at a place of worship and injuring, intimidating, and interfering with the exercise of the right of religious freedom at a place of worship.
Lemon sought out legal counsel with Hunter Biden’s attorney Abbe Lowell, who says that his client will vigorously fight the charges against him. At a court appearance on Friday in Los Angeles, Lemon did not enter a plea and was released without bond. He will appear at a Minneapolis Federal Court hearing on February 9.
This particular protest happened when demonstrators entered St. Paul’s Cities Church after learning that their pastor is an ICE agent. The judge overseeing the hearing noted that Lemon does not have to report to anyone and must ask permission before leaving the country. However, a planned trip to France in June has already been approved.
Lemon Speaks Out
Following the court hearing, Don Lemon spoke with reporters outside the courthouse. He said,
“Last night, the DOJ sent a team of federal agents to arrest me in the middle of the night for something that I’ve been doing for the last 30 years, and that is covering the news. The First Amendment of the Constitution protects that work for me and for countless other journalists who do what I do. I stand with all of them, and I will not be silenced. I look forward to my day in court.”
Attorney Abbe Lowell defended Lemon and all journalists by noting that Don did nothing different than he had in the 30 years he’s been a reporter. He was covering the news. Lowell continued to speak on the matter by noting that the DOJ should be focused on the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by ICE agents in Minneapolis.
Court documents state that Lemon livestreamed the protest to social media while everyone involved reiterated their location would not be disclosed. He even moved away from his microphone once to avoid the final destination being given away.
The indictment paperwork alleges that Lemon, along with two others, surrounded and intimidated the pastor. The document states that those indicted are accused of having “oppressed, threatened, and intimidated the Church congregants and pastors by physically occupying most of the main aisle and row of chairs near the front of the Church, engaging in menacing and threatening behavior.”
Don Lemon’s attorney Abbe Lowell is outraged by how Lemon was arrested:
“They wanted it to be terrifying. They waited until he went to Los Angeles. They waited until 11:30 at night. There was a bevy of agents.”
