She suffered from a stroke earlier this year, and it drastically affected her mobility. She has been in a wheelchair for months. ‘Bringing Up Bates‘: Kelly Jo Bates Shares Special Message For Late Papa Bill
Kelly Jo recently took to IG Stories to share a throwback photo of Mama Jane and Papa Bill. According to the Bringing Up Bates star, Papa Bill would be celebrating his 88th birthday today with the family. She added that there would be hotdogs, homemade peach ice cream, and a lot of laughter. Kelly Jo said, “We miss him terribly! But we’re thankful for every celebration & every memory we shared together!” Papa Bill passed away on May 13, 2025. He was battling dementia before dying peacefully in South Carolina. Since then, members of the Bates family have been consistently taking turns visiting Mama Jane to look after her.
Mama Jane Out Of Her Wheelchair On Special Day
In an Instagram post, Kelly Jo shared a lengthy message to celebrate multiple occasions following the Fourth of July. The Bringing Up Bates star wrote, “As the country celebrated America’s Birthday yesterday, our family also had 3 very special birthdays: Our grandson Dakota who turned 1, Our son-in-law Kelton who turned 31, & Papa Bill who would’ve turned 88 this year.”
Kelly Jo also recalled the memories her family had when Papa Bill was still alive. She added that her life has been busy since Mama Jane’s stroke. Kelly Jo wrote, “My weeks since Jane’s stroke in February have been a lot busier with a huge shift in schedules as I travel with several of the kids to the farm every other week to help care for her.”
But what’s noticeable is the photo of Mama Jane, back on her feet. Some of the Bates kids have shared photos of her in a wheelchair. Mama Jane was found lying in the middle of her farm in South Carolina earlier this year, and it was revealed that she wouldn’t have survived if she hadn’t been found sooner. In addition to that, she also went through radiation treatment for her nose cancer last year, which took a huge toll on her mobility. But based on Kelly Jo’s post, it’s clear that she’s finally regaining her strength.
